Fluorescence-Based DO Sensing

No membrane. No electrolyte. No routine replacement.

Dissolved oxygen is the single most critical parameter in aquaculture, and one of the most maintenance-intensive to monitor using traditional methods. Fluorescence-based sensing eliminates the consumable cycle that makes conventional DO monitoring costly and time-consuming to sustain.

What It Does

Linksens fluorescence-based DO sensors deliver accurate, continuous dissolved oxygen measurement without the membranes, electrolytes, or flow dependencies that define traditional Clark-cell electrode sensors. The result is a DO sensor that maintains measurement accuracy over extended deployment periods with significantly reduced maintenance requirements — and no consumable parts to stock, replace, or dispose of.

How It Works

A blue LED excites a fluorescent dye on the sensor tip. Oxygen molecules in the water quench the fluorescence signal — the degree of quenching is proportional to dissolved oxygen concentration. No electrochemical reaction occurs, eliminating the consumable elements of traditional DO measurement.

Key Advantages

No consumables — ever
No membrane replacement, no electrolyte refill, no flow cell cleaning. The absence of electrochemical consumables removes the most common source of ongoing maintenance cost and operational disruption associated with traditional DO monitoring.

♦ Unaffected by flow rate or H₂S interference: Traditional membrane-electrode sensors require minimum flow across the membrane to function accurately, and are vulnerable to hydrogen sulfide poisoning in wastewater and high-organic environments. Fluorescence sensors have no such dependencies — delivering reliable readings regardless of flow conditions or water chemistry.
♦ Extended calibration intervals: The fluorescence sensing principle is inherently more stable over time than electrochemical methods — typically allowing calibration intervals measured in months rather than weeks, reducing the frequency of field calibration visits.
♦ Suitable for continuous long-term deployment: Designed for extended submersion in biologically active environments including aquaculture ponds, wastewater treatment tanks, and surface water bodies — where frequent access for maintenance is impractical.

Who Benefits Most

Aquaculture operators monitoring pond or tank dissolved oxygen around the clock benefit most directly — replacing a high-maintenance sensor type with one that can sustain reliable performance between scheduled maintenance visits. Wastewater treatment operators monitoring biological treatment zones and surface water monitoring agencies deploying sensors at remote or difficult-to-access locations will also find significant operational benefit.

Aquaculture
A large-scale marine shrimp farming base operating over 500 acres and 20 ponds faced repeated water quality crises under high-density farming conditions. Manual testing once or twice daily using test strips could not capture overnight dissolved oxygen crashes or sudden ammonia spikes from residual feed decomposition. With 6 workers required for shift-based inspections across 20 ponds, labor costs were high and data remained fragmented — feeding and water exchange decisions relied entirely on operator experience, leading to resource waste and extended farming cycles.
