River Basin Network Enables Pollution Source Tracing Within Hours of Detection
Surface Water Monitoring · Multi-country river basin
Representative of river monitoring network projects
An environmental monitoring agency responsible for a cross-boundary river basin needed to upgrade from periodic manual sampling to a continuous data network. The river basin served both as a surface water resource and a receiving water body for treated discharges from multiple upstream industrial zones. When pollution events occurred, the agency's existing sampling schedule — covering key cross-sections every two to three days — meant that by the time elevated COD or ammonia readings were confirmed by laboratory analysis, the pollution plume had already moved significantly downstream, making source identification extremely difficult.
Linksens designed a networked multi-station deployment across 12 monitoring points spanning the river basin, including key cross-sections, major discharge confluence points, and cross-boundary monitoring locations. Each station was equipped with the Multiparameter Water Quality Sonde covering dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, and turbidity as continuous baseline parameters, with S-COD161 COD Sensors and S-NH134 Ammonia Nitrogen Sensors providing targeted compliance-relevant parameter tracking.
Stations are solar-powered with 4G data transmission, uploading readings every 15 minutes to a centralized platform. When any parameter at any station crosses a configurable alert threshold, the system triggers an immediate notification. By comparing the timing and concentration profile of the anomaly across multiple upstream and downstream stations, operators can identify the likely source zone within hours rather than days.
| Metric | Outcome |
| Monitoring frequency | From every 48–72 hrs to every 15 minutes |
| Pollution event detection speed | Hours vs. days under previous sampling regime |
| Source tracing capability | Multi-station correlation enabled within same monitoring event |
| Data coverage | 12 stations providing continuous, auditable records |
| Regulatory reporting | Automated from continuous data vs. manual laboratory submissions |
"Representative of cross-boundary river monitoring projects where environmental agencies are building networked data infrastructure to meet increasing real-time reporting obligations."
