Municipal WWTP Reduces Aeration Energy Costs While Maintaining Discharge Compliance; Municipal Wastewater Treatment · Southeast Asia; Representative of projects completed across municipal treatment facilities in the region
A mid-sized municipal wastewater treatment plant processing urban sewage faced two simultaneous pressures: increasingly strict effluent limits on ammonia nitrogen and COD, and rising energy costs driven by fixed-schedule aeration that ran regardless of actual biological treatment demand. Operators had no real-time visibility into influent load variation — when heavy rainfall caused sudden changes in incoming wastewater composition, the first indication was often an effluent reading that was already out of range.
Linksens deployed a multi-point online monitoring configuration covering the influent stage, biological treatment zone, and final discharge point. At the influent, the S-COD161 COD Sensor tracks organic load in real time, providing advance input to operators before changes reach the biological stage. In the aeration tanks, S-DO011 Dissolved Oxygen Sensors feed real-time data to the C-MT013 Water Quality Controller, enabling dissolved oxygen-responsive aeration control rather than time-based operation. At the discharge point, S-NH134 Ammonia Nitrogen Sensor and S-SSTSS/181 Suspended Solids Sensor provide continuous compliance monitoring, with the A-SEC051 Online Water Quality Analyzer integrating multi-parameter data for automated regulatory reporting.
| Metric | Outcome |
| Discharge compliance rate | Maintained at 100% post-deployment |
| Aeration energy consumption | Reduced through DO-responsive control |
| Response time to influent shock loads | Reduced from hours (lab testing) to minutes (online) |
| Compliance reporting | Automated from manual data compilation |
"This type of deployment is representative of how municipal treatment operators across the region are using real-time data to move from fixed operating schedules to condition-responsive treatment."
